Attractive shopping facilities are just as much an integral part of the business model of airports today as air travel itself. The arrivals area at Turin Airport, which was redesigned in 2019, has a shopping arcade including a store of the Italian supermarket chain Crai. Architect Barbara Sembianti and her Studio L'AB developed an innovative concept for the small area, giving the store a spacious and modern appearance despite the unfavourable room layout.
Light creates a spacious feel
The organic forms of the basic architecture symbolise the dynamics of aviation. The architect contrasts this with a large-scale wall graphic in the store with a view of the city of Turin, so that travellers and customers have no doubt as to where they are. The lighting, colour scheme and lines create a pleasant illusion of space in the salesroom and the logo, signs and shop fittings have also been redesigned in line with the "Cuor di Crai" convenience concept.
A focus on regional specialities
Efficient general lighting is provided by Pendiro TX LED panels. The central counter with regional specialities is highlighted with additional direct lighting from a suspended track structure with Ontero ID spotlights in the light colour 927. A niche in the room housing the wine department is illuminated brilliantly and atmospherically by Ontero RA spotlights on ceiling-mounted tracks. This creates a lively, clear spatial impression that puts travellers in the right mood for their visit to Turin.
